We've received links to three videos from two recent public input meetings. In Part I citizens and property owners weigh in and ask questions of the consultants about the proposed Northeast Polk County Beltway. In Part II the decision-making process for the proposed beltway is explained by 1000 Friends of Iowa's Program Director, Stephanie Weisenbach. The third video was taken at the NW 26th Street Interchange And MLK Extension Public Input Meeting held on July 17, 2008. Again, citizens and property owners share their concerns & ask questions. You can view this video here. |

The Northeast Polk County Beltway is a proposed traffic corridor around the northeast side of the metro area through the last expanse of Polk County's prime farmland. The proposed beltway would extend from Altoona at I-80 north to the edge of the city of Elkhart (or possibly much farther north), west to the Polk City area, and then south to IA 141/IA 415. The NW 26th Street project/MLK Extension is a proposed north/south traffic corridor. Proponents of the project, including some Polk County Supervisors, city officials, and developers, want a four-lane extension of MLK, Jr. Parkway from Euclid Avenue in Des Moines north to Interstate 35/80, and interchange, and a widened NW 26th Street leading to IA 415 in the Ankeny area. Citizen comments will be used to narrow the range of alternatives to "preferred" locations for both projects. You can learn more about each project and range of alternatives at: http://www.polkcountyiowa.gov/PublicWorks/pages/specialProjects.aspx
