Issues We Address

1000 Friends of Iowa promotes responsible development that

  •  Conserves and protects our agricultural and natural resources
  •  Revitalizes our neighborhoods, towns, and cities; and
  •  Improves the quality of life for future generations

1000 Friends of Iowa seeks to prevent urban sprawl through citizen engagement and education about sustainable development. We support development that creates more livable communities and implementation of smart growth principles.  We also support land use planning that protects farmalnd and natural areas by directing development to appropriate places.

Our work on land use connects to four primary issues

1000 Friends works to build better communities while preventing poor land use decisions. To better understand what is affected by poor land use decisions, check out a fact sheet from 1000 Friends of Iowa, Top Ten Things Adversely Affected by Poor Land Use Decisions. This explains how local businesses, quality of life, agriculture, and other issues are connected to land use.
